a bunch o' stuff

whew. what a week.

thank god the week-END was relatively chill.
here's what went down:

1. finished up my first, last, and only rotation with mi esposo.
thank. god. (now. ladies. i know you think you love your man. i'm sure you do. but can you work with him? and not in an environment where you are both established in your field, but in one where you are both still kissing ass and sucking up and trying to prove to your attending physician (read: boss) that you are capable of having people's lives in your hands--since you are, after all, in the ICU of all places--and trying oh so very hard not to look like an idiot. i could write a whole blog post on the psyche of medical training in America these days. i'll refrain for now, but suffice it to say, the whole, lovey-dovey newlywed thing does not lend itself very well to a medical training environment. to say nothing of the competition of it all.)  it's over, is all i can say. got a little hairy there toward the end, but we survived, and did indeed make it to....

2. our eight monthiversary!
for us, 1.28.11 demarcated eight months of wedded bliss (well. MOSTLY blissful. see #1). we were still weeding through the aftermath of the above, so it was not much of a celebration. and no pictures were taken. probably for the better. but the date came. and went. and we survived. and are still married. and happy. (: now.

3. we took a photography class.
thanks to youswoop.com, for a low low price, we were able to attend the Richard Stromberg School of Photography, as a date. there was wine, and cheese, and best of all, the decoding of the ever-mysterious terms "f-stop". "aperture". (i now know that those are pretty much the same thing) "shutter speed". "ISO". and how to manipulate these things to take better pictures.

so professional.

i swear he has a face.
note: i am still practicing the "take better pictures" part. have patience.

4. we went to dinner with friends.
sadly--or not so sadly, we had SUCH a good time at dinner (cafe 28. cuban food. delish. thanks, chicago, for another delightful evening), that this was the only photo taken. so enjoy it.
see the "A to Z" bottle, 5th from the left? highly recommend it.

5. i gave myself a mani/pedi.
using this delicious color, as it reminds me of warmer days to come...

essie. such cute bottles. though, in truth, i prefer opi's brushes. (:
i also love how this color--or a slight variation thereof--is showing up all over j.crew's spring collection...and by "all over", clearly i mean all over the models' lips.
j.crew. i love you.
6. we cleaned the shoebox.
nick did the bathroom. he's too wimpy to touch toilets sans gloves, so these are the ones he uses.
yes. those are size small.
funny side story: nick walked into the hallway of our building wearing these gloves, and apparently happened to make eye contact with one of our neighbors (this doesn't happen often). he came back in the house and was like "great. now she probably thinks i've stashed a body somewhere." i busted up laughing. HIlairious, he is.
nothing sexier than the sight of a man cleaning.
another side note: these pictures are a tad underexposed for my taste, however, in my own defense, i must point out that during this mini photo shoot, all the images through my viewfinder were super blurry. i panicked, convinced that either a) i was losing my vision OR b) the camera was broken...not sure which would've been worse. nick checked it out and confirmed the blurriness, so i knew my vision was fine. (whew.) i immediately googled my problem and discovered how to...

7. adjust the diopter on my camera.
for my fellow un-informed friends, that would be the little dial to the right of the viewfinder (if you have a canon 40d. no idea where it is on other models. i don't own any other models. (: ). this was a pretty big deal for me. postponed my heart attack for another day and time. hence the reason why it gets its own number.

8. i dreamed of france.
mostly aided by the sweet croonings of this gem

and that, my friends, is all.

a Florida sunrise. circa 2008.
a dream is a wish your heart makes
when you're fast asleep
in dreams you will lose your heartache
whatever you wish for, you keep.
have faith in your dreams and someday
your rainbow will come sliding through
no matter how your heart is grieving
if you keep on believing
the dream that you wish will come true

woke up with this song in my head this morning
can't remember any dreams, but i'm curious...
did you have any dreams?
or songs stuck in your head when you woke up?

a lovely engagement

this week was busy. and full of fun with friends.
melissa...who has been my long-lost friend since august, as she has been in D.C. doing away rotations so she could be near her fiance...returned!
only for the weekend, but it was enough to tide me over till i go visit her in D.C. in Feb
(how are you appreciate the play-by-play on my life thus far?)

then, another friend, todd, enlisted my help to plan the most surprisiest of surprise proposals for my friend jen.

it went off like clockwork...and i even managed to document it all on film....

the cuuuutest lil goat.

he's the mascot for this restie. chef is Stephanie Izard, of Top Chef fame. delish. so. delish.

the lovely jen. she hates this picture. but i love it. and this is MY blog.

we did a lot of this.

randi and julie. i'm still not great at focusing on two faces when one is closer to me. anyone?

the oh-so-infuriatingly-photogenic melissa. or quick, as i like to call her. because it's her last name.

phase two of the evening. we went from dinner to the Hancock, for some "scenic cocktails"

go Bears! sad day.

the "scenic" part. from the 96th floor of the Hancock, you can see all of Chicago.
note: i blame the cocktails for my inability to actually capture any of Chicago's BUILDINGS on film
they were immediately to my left from here.
moments after she said yes. epitome of happiness.

a reenactment.

putting on the ring.

the PRETTIEST flowers.

then we met back up with friends for a celebration at the Irish pub du jour: Butch McGuire's

hey look! there's me! (and nick.)

something was hiLARious.

jen and todd. the happy couple.

kaveh, quick, jen. and look! i found my flash!

i think quick likes this pose.
so there you have it.
yes, it was a weekend recap.
but i think this was a weekend that deserved recapping.

random facts...and an award

posted on: Monday, January 10, 2011

well well well. i have won something.

and let me tell you. it feels sublime.
to know that someone out there appreciates my random ramblings enough
to deem lil ol' me...
--a Stylish Blogger--

and thereby award me with this...

i know. you probably feel i don't deserve it.
i, too, feel unworthy.
and blessed.

anyhow. the stipulations are, i am to list 7 random things about myself, and to pass it on to whomever i deem worthy.
game on.
  1. if i could see any band live--past or present--it would be Led Zeppelin. if the band had to actually have all live members, i'd have to go with Wilco.
  2. i make amazing guacamole.
  3. i am a second lieutenant in the US Air Force. and i will be a Captain in May.
  4. i was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
  5. i love food. no, seriously. i will splurge on it without reservation. i might even call myself a "foodie". ooo and wine too. i love wine. and gin. especially Beefeater. mostly because i just like to walk up to the bar and say "do you have any Beefeater?" try it. it's fun.
  6. i know you all think you are married to the greatest guy out there. but you are mistaken. i am. he even drives me crazy by taking until January to renew his truck registration which expired in...September. not that i'm bitter. at all.
  7.  Emily is my middle name. i'm not telling my first name.
so now I'm supposed to pass it on.
i'm a tad apprehensive about this, because i feel that it might be bad form to bestow this honor upon someone twice...
however, i'm afraid i have not the time to thoroughly look and see if any of the people i'm listing are repeat offenders.

so forgive me.
apparently more than one person thinks you're stylish, if this happens.
it's a good thing.

Rachel @ rachelisabeth
Marseille @ him&her
Coco @ Roost
Eleni @ My Paradissi

seriously though. check out these blogs, if you haven't already.
they're daily reads for me, all.

welcome to your late twenties

27 hit me pretty hard.

on the morning of my birthday,
a. it was monday.
b. i had to work. (i haven't had to go work/school on my birthday since maybe....2nd grade?)
how is this possible?..you ask? well, leap years aside, i was homeschooled. and i always insisted that school start AFTER my day of birth. so there.
c. i woke up with some wicked aches and pains. (possibly due to the reincarnation of my gym routine post-Xmas-break.)
d. the day before my birthday, i skyped mi broheim in Afghany (yay!) and he informed me that i was a mere 3 years from 30.

thanks for the reminder, lil bro. i'll be sure to cushion the blow for you when your time comes.

but then the hubs made me breakfast.
and we went to work together (big first. we've never had the same rotation at the same hospital before.)
then we got off at like, 1pm (which NEVER happens. and is clearly awesome.)
went to the gym. (i know. strong moves. it IS 2011 after all.)
and went shopping.

it was sort of a modified shopping trip, since we went to REI
which is clearly a sporting goods store
but we were on a mission...

for this!
 meet my new backpack.
it's sort of a backpack/duffel/amazingness.
there's a zip-away daypack which will hold my camera, jacket, etc.
and then the straps zip away into another compartment to make it easier to check/carry on planes.
plus, the lumbar support.
oh...the lumbar support.

in action.

gratuitous butt shot. obviously Nick was my photographer here.
where am i going, you ask?

oh...just a little place called Turkey.

after we work our way through Turkey,
we'll do a little hopping through the Greek Isles

oh hello Santorini
just for a wee taste of freedom before we are chained to our respective residency programs

and because we have a month of vacation still to burn before graduation

and because we love to travel

and because we can

thank God in heaven for that!
gotta love the self-timer. and the off-centeredness.

my tulip. from the other side of my new lens.
so there you have it.
my birthday in a nutshell.

27 has been pretty rough for me all week,
and now i think i've caught some vicious disease from one of my patients in the ICU.
(thanks a lot.)

but hopefully i've effectively adjusted to 2011,
and can get back to my normal blogging routine.

it was a very good year

just hours after getting engaged
in order to tell you about 2010, i really have to start in 2009.
my year kicked off with a rock.
an engagement ring, to be exact.
on Christmas Day.
then we rang in the New Year...
Hello 2010!  Welcome!
Then in January, we went to Galena, Illinois with some besties from med school...
a Galena waterfall. and besties' behinds.
also, I turned 26.
February brought the warmth of Katelynn's red hair..
red and green look SO good together
 March brought some showers.
just one, to be exact.
of the bridal variety.
for me.
and many of my besties traveled far and wide to be with me.
it was grand.
i seriously have the hottest friends.
not to be outdone,
in April, my friends and classmates in Chicago took me out on the town
for a little bachelorette action
it's a bachelorette sandwich!
May brought the big day
but first we did Italy with the fam
Cinque Terre

Firenze (Florence, for all you non-Italians (: )
 May 28, 2010
(note that 2+8=10. and 10 is a multiple of 5. and May is the 5th month. i told you i'm a teensy bit obsessed with 5's.)
pinch me? i can't believe that ACTUALLY happened.

making it legal. in an old palace. no big deal.

he likes me. a little.

okay so i like him too.
(all GOOD May images courtesy of Jessica Lorren Photography)

in June, i literally didn't take a single picture.
this is because I was studying for Step 2 of my boards.
kind of like June didn't even happen.

anyway. on to July!
Nick and I roadtripped from Chicago to California,
where all our friends and family were waiting to shower us with love AGAIN.
(we are very spoiled. i'm aware of this.)
we had a reception in Santa Cruz, CA. Nick's hometown.
me and mi mamacita.

me, the cousins, and the brother. (one of the brothers)

me and mi papacita. and the wedding dress makes its second appearance.

more beautiful besties

that margarita was delish.

the broheim made it to Cali AND Italy for my big day(s). he's my hero. truly.
we took advantage of our time in Cali
and did a little Big Sur camping
not too shabby, Camp America

my handsome camp-mates.
i also did a little Napa with RachieRach

in August, we were back in the Chi
and enjoying a little Ray Lamontagne in the park.
while i desperately tried to figure out how to use my new (used) Canon 40D
 in September, not much happened.
mostly because I LIVED at Cook County Hospital
in the Trauma Bay
on call.

but I did get a Le Creuset!
October was a month of trips.
Farm Aid (not pictured here)

trip to FL to see la familia
and mi hermano
before he left for ol' Afghany
for a lil' baby shower
and some much needed lake time with these beauties

then we were off to Tejas in November
where all I saw was the inside of an ER
and a whoooooole lotta these.
got back to Chicago just in time for Thanksgiving
where I looked like this
because my Cowboys lost.
Marion Barber is my fave.
December was a whirlwind.
you were all kept abreast of most of my comings and goings during this month
the fact that I matched!
and will be MOVING to San Antonio
to become an ER doctor
once and for all.

but on the side,
I went to Brooklyn to visit this beauty
em&em. melt in your mouth. not in your hand.
 i built one of these.
made a stop in Philly to take a whack at this...
oops...did i do that?
then back to Chicago with these fine folks
 my last moments of 2010.
note the slight degeneration of my person throughout the night...

my husband. what a pimp.

looking a wee bit guilty. no idea what i did.
so there you have it ladies and gents
(although let's be honest. there are probably no men reading this blog.)
(except maybe for you, Joe. and this in no way makes you less of a man.)

out with 2010.
in with 2011.
so far, 2011 has been filled with quite a bit of lounging.
as it should be.

i need to rest up.
my 27th year begins in precisely 42 minutes...
